Final Portfolio Assessment & Report Card Post - Active Learning 2015

This year has been an amazing experience in PE this year! I have improved and achieved the goals I set at the beginning of the year and had fun the whole way along. I made friends with people I wouldn't have ever met (from grade 2's to grade 10's) and I have so many awesome memories that I'll remember for a long time :)

PARTICIPATION: 23/25
(Ability to participate and the quality of participation of in-class activities)

Attendance and punctuality: 4.5/5
  • I have never had an unexcused absence, but I have missed class for volunteering and appointments a couple of times during the year.

Wearing gym strip: 5/5
  • I always bring a change of clothes for gym strip and never forgot it during the year.

Physical presence/intensity level during games: 4.5/5
  • In class, I try my best to be a contributing factor to the activity I am involved in because I honestly find it boring to not try. A couple of times, I think I could've been more intense during the activity, and I regret not doing that on those days.

"Skill level" in various games: 4.5/5
  • I am an athletic person and that comes across in a lot of the games we play, but there are some games that I'm just not good at (aka football and lacrosse). Even so, I try my best during these games to get better so they can be more enjoyable in the future.

Motivation behind your selection of activities on choice days: 4.5/5
  • I really enjoy choice days because it gives me options on what activity I want to do on that particular day, whether it be a new activity such as atomic volleyball, or an activity that I've done before and enjoyed such as handball.
  • My motivation behind the activity I choose varies, but normally it is based on the fact that I like a certain activity or that my friends chose something and I want to be with them.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: 23/25
(Factors that led to improving skills around working with peers to make everyone's experience more successful)

Leadership: 4.5/5
  • I almost always help organize the choice activity that I'm participating in because it helps get the activity started faster and gives us more time to play. Even if I have an idea of what I think would be the best way to get something done, I always listen to others' ideas and incorporate them into whatever we're doing.
  • I have a positive attitude towards others and am a team player, so I always encourage and cheer on my peers because it helps them reach their full potential as well.

Initiative: 4.5/5
  • I help get equipment and set up the activity we're doing because I like starting right away and helping out in the class.
  • On choice days I help organize the game that I'm involved in, even if it's not just my class participating.

Positive energy and social dynamic during activities: 4/5

  • I am a very competitive person so a couple times I got frustrated when others didn't try hard or participate, but it was my goal to improve this and encourage them get involved instead, and I found that I was doing this a lot at the end of the year as opposed to getting mad.
Honesty during competition and on fitness scores: 5/5
  • I am always honest in competition because it is when people start cheating that the activity becomes unengaging and nobody wants to play it anymore.
  • I am ALWAYS honest with my fitness scores because if you lie about them, you aren't lying to everyone else, you are lying to yourself. Also, I use the fitness scores as a gauge for my improvement and that helps with my field hockey.

Connections with the community/volunteering: 5/5
  • I volunteer in the school and community because I think it is one of the best ways to give back and become involved. I coach the "Minis" in one of my field hockey clubs and I coach with the Special Olympics Rhythmic Gymnastics level B team. I love seeing the smiles on the athletes' faces when they succeed and improve.

HEALTHY LIVING: 23/25
(Aspects of your past, current, and future data and goals on health and fitness)

Actual fitness scores compared to others and what they teach you: 4/5
  • My PB on the Beep Test is 9.7 and this is ranked as "very good" on the ratings for a 15 year old female.

Noteworthy changes in Fitness: 5/5
  • From the beginning of PE in grade 8, I had a score of 5 on the beep test and I've improved a lot since then.
  • This year, on my first beep test I got a score of 8.1, on my second one I got a score of 9.1 and on my last beep test I got a score of 9.7. My goal at the beginning of the year was to get a 9.5 on the beep test, so I achieved that.

Some of the barriers/limitations you face in participating: 4.5/5
  • I don't really have barriers and limitations when I'm participating because if I can't do something (such as Yoga), I'll modify it. One thing I need to work on more is my flexibility, but I did improve a little this year.

Dietary choices and extra curricular activity choices and their impact on overall health: 4.5/5
  • I eat healthy because I find that I get sick and don't feel well after eating junk food. Also, with the amount of physical activity I do, it is important to fuel my body with good and nutritious foods.
  • I play field hockey 4-5 days (games and practices) a week and at the practices I also run as well as play.

Injury prevention, management, and rehabilitation, and future plans/goals for overall health choices: 5/5
  • I always warm up and stretch before I do an activity because getting injured could prevent me from playing Field Hockey and doing Tae Kwon Do.
  • When I got injured, I went to physio and did my exercises and got better.
  • I want to keep on improving my fitness and health and continuing to eat healthy and play field hockey and do Tae Kwon Do.

DIGITAL PORTFOLIO AND REFLECTIVE SKILLS: 23/25
(Aspects of blog posts)

Total collection of digital evidence and number of posts: 5/5
  • I have 48 blog posts!!!

Quality of the selection of evidence as a demonstration of learning: 4.5/5
  • I have blog posts about: weight room workouts and images of me doing the workouts, numerous fitness scores and testing days (beep test and the exercises afterwards), diet and extra curricular activities outside or school, a reflective post about the quality of my blog as compared to others, a mid term post, a final post, and multiple posts with evidence of social responsibility choices I make in class, plus other posts about events I participate in.
The quality of the summaries/explanation of the evidence (with reflection of effort, new learning cited, research included, and future goals/plans set): 4/5
  • I write full and complete blogs with evidence and connections to my past fitness and my future goals. I also write about how I feel about the activity and how I feel like I did and how I can improve in the future.

The usefulness of comments on peers blog entries as a part of socially constructed learning and assessment: 5/5
  • I post constructive and positive comments on my peers blogs.
  • I use the advice that my classmates give me to improve because I want to be the best a I can be whenever I'm doing something.

Ability to synthesize entries into a summative final post which provides evidence for learning: 4.5/5
  • I guess I'm doing this right now and I'd like to think that I'm doing a good job...
  • I referred to past experiences and things I do in class on a regular basis in this blog post and pulled my year together into one overall post. I also added a couple of screenshots from my blog.

Overall, this year I've that I've worked hard, improved, and had a positive impact on the class in general. I believe I deserve an A and a 92% for my efforts this year :)

Final Buddy Visit

On Tuesday, we had our last buddy visit and it was bittersweet. I didn't realize how much I had started looking forward to seeing my buddy the next time we went, but it turns out it was a lot. I enjoyed being able to be a older role model and friend for my little buddy and getting to know him. For the last visit, I took some Lego for him and we made a captain America shield that he kept because he said that he was one of his favourite super heroes. He gave me a tour of his classroom and showed me some pictures he had made, which reminded me of how proud I used to be when I showed my work to someone. This experience has taught me how easy it is to make someone happy by thinking of them first and giving them your full attention instead of being distracted with your own problems. By being around my little buddy, I really was able to let go of my problems for half an hour on those Tuesday's and just relax and have fun. In the end, I hope I was able to impact my little buddy and make him happy the way he was able to do so for me.

BCCH Child Run 2015

Instead of running the Child Run by myself and going for my time, I ran the 5 km with my brother, since it was his first time running it. His goal was 42 minutes, but he ended up getting 33min 53sec!!! I was super proud of him and it was really fun running with him.

For 14 years, my family has participated and raised money for BC Children's Hospital with our team "Jeevan's Journey" because it is our way of giving back for all they've done for my little sister. This year, we raised $10 000 and overall (in 14 years) we have raised $145 000 for the hospital. It is an event we look forward to every year and it has become a family tradition. Next year, since it is our 15th anniversary, we want to make a huge team and raise more money than we ever have before, so let me know if you're interested :)

Buddy Visit

Toady we went to visit our little buddies again. We had just finished our band concert so it was really confusing and disorganized, but most of us managed to make it there on time. Today, we played a modified game of baseball (using a tennis racquet and tennis ball) to work on their catching and throwing. For the last couple of visits, we worked in these two things individually, but now it was time to put it into a game for them to play, so they could apply their skills and learning. My buddy and I partnered up with Pallvi and her buddy. We followed the rules of the game that Neuf told us and our buddies had a really fun time. We cheered them on and encouraged them to remember what they had learnt before. After class, Pallvi and I reflected on the visit and agreed that we were a positive part of our buddies' gym class today and helped them learn and improve their skills while having good sportsmanship. Next time we go, it will be the last time we see our buddies and I'm excited to see them again!

Parent Project Mid-Term (Guest Blogger- My Dad)

DIGITAL PORTFOLIO:

Have you read your son/daughters blog? Was there anything that surprised you or stood out immediately?

Yes... I was impressed with the level of detail she provides...I notice she enjoys sayings..

What was your favourite part about reading his/her reflections?

It provides me a better insight into her thinking and approach to fitness in general and her gym class.

What did you learn about your son/daughter that you didn't know before reading the blog?

The different types of activities she does and the number of pictures she takes, I know she enjoys taking pictures.

What part of your child's growth/personality has been reaffirmed for you?

Her commitment to her fitness and the work ethic and level of detail she provides.

What is missing in the blog that you think s/he should include for the teacher or peers?

I noticed she did not discuss her Team BC field hockey endeavours.

If you were evaluating him/her on his/her blogging efforts, what would you say? What would you give him/her out of 25? How did you come up with that number?

23/25. I based the number on her level of detail, her commitment to fitness, the overall look of the blog, the pictures to support her activities, her motivational saying. overall it is very complete and thorough.

HEALTHY LIVING:

What do you notice about your child's health choices outside of school?

She makes good choices regarding her health outside of school.

What activity and or diet choices does s/he make on their own?

She generally makes good food choices. She is drinking more water, eating more yogurt, granola and trying to eat other healthy snacks.

What exercise/eating choices are encouraged buy the family/household?

We encourage healthy eating and being active as a way of life. She has a good breakfast, snacks throughout the day, plenty of water, and a good supper. She generally stays away from unhealthy choices.

Did you see any evidence of this in his/her blog?

Yes, she posted a photo of her breakfast.

What is missing that should be included?

Some more detail regarding her food choices to provide you with a more complete picture, or she could take more photos.

What improvements do you think your child could/should make to further his/her understanding and participation in his/her own health?

She is working on being a member of Team BC field hockey. She does her stretching and strength exercises, but needs to be more consistent with them. She also could so some more running. she understands the level of competition and what she needs to do in order to succeed. however, balancing school, homework, activities and sports can be challenging at times.

What things can you as parent do to push this learning/practice?

We support her as much as possible, encourage her to take ownership, drive her to the gym and practices. we provide feedback to her and try to make sure she understands what it takes to succeed.

If you were to evaluate your son/daughter on their progress towards personal healthy life choices what would you say? What mark would you give them out of 25 for his/her efforts and demonstration of those efforts in the blog? How did you come up with that number?

22/25. She is very active, makes good health choices. her blog is quite detailed and she has put a lot of thought and effort into it. she wants to succeed and continues to work towards it.

Circuit Fitness

Today, since it was pretty good weather outside, the whole block did the Fitness Circuit on the upper field. I was in a group with Bo, Yulia, Shiho, Gaby, Nicole, Pallvi, Cece, and Nathan. We had really high energy and actually had a fun time while doing a good job of exercising at the same time. We made it fun for ourselves by doing everything as a team and encouraging each other A LOT. We sang and danced a lot too (lol???)

Also, too bad Neuf wasn't there, we missed you...

Volunteering

On Sunday, May 10, I volunteered at the Special Olympics 30th Annual Mother's Day Walkathon with Pallvi and Gagan. I am a rhythmic gymnastics coach in the SOBC program as my sister is an athlete and its a great way for me to give back. We did glitter tattoos for the people who wanted and it was really fun to put a smile on people's faces :)

BOOT CAMP FITNESS

Today, since both band classes were together, there wasn't enough room in the gym for all the classes so we went outside to the back parking lot and did a boot camp that consisted of various exercises. I partnered up with Sarah for the challenge thing at it was really hard because we were competing to win. In the end I won, but that's not what is important because we both had a really good workout and pushed to our maxes. I was sweating a lot at the end and my face was flushed. One thing I regret was choosing to run for the first drill because it would've been more beneficial to do in the middle, but now I know for next time. Today, I give myself a 4.5/5 overall because I was exhausted at the end and I encouraged my peers to keep going when we were tired. Mine and Sarah's scores are posted below:

Speedball- Monday, May 4

Today both band classes played speedball, which is one of my favourite games to play because it is really fun and a good workout at the same time. I find that I run a lot in this game because I like to participate. Overall I would rate my effort as a 4/5 today because I was sweating and breathing heavy at the end, but there was some points where I think that I could have tried a little harder to run to the ball and get there first. Two things I did today to make the class better for my peers were (and I know that they're obvious) passing the ball to others and cheering on and encouraging everyone when they have the ball or are fighting to get it. Next time, I will probably volunteer to be the goalie for part of the time so everyone gets a chance to run and score. Overall, the participation was awesome and I love having combined gym class with the other band because we can do so many bigger games.

Tuesday, April 28- Fitness Day

We did the fitness in which one person does the exercises in the gym while the other person runs the lap and then we switch. I was partners with Alexis, but did the exercises with Boyana since we were running and doing the exercises at the same time. I think we really motivated each other and worked hard for the whole block. We made sure we were doing the exercises correctly and fully. The reason I tried really hard was because I want to stay in shape for my own health and field hockey Spring League and provincials just started up.

Buddies Visit

Today we went to see our buddies again and it was the best visit yet. We played Rock Paper Scissors in an interesting way and it was really fun because our buddies had to use their bodies to make the shapes. My buddy caught on right away and understood the different was to be the rock, paper, or scissors. He didn't copy his opponents either which was good.
I think that over the past couple of visits, my buddy jas become more comfortable around me and isn't as hesitant to answer questions and talk to me, which makes me happy :)

P.S. One thing I noticed was that he cut his hair so he doesn't have an afro anymore.

Yummy Breakfast

Granola and Fruit :)

Biking at the Park

Yesterday, I went biking at T.E. Scott park with my little siblings. We biked to the park and then had mini races around to track for around an hour. It was really fun and nice because it was sunny. It was also good exercise and I'm excited to do it again soon.

Friday Fitness

On Friday, our class ran sprint relays on the lower field. I tried really hard to sprint the best I could because sprinting is something I need to improve on. We ran a short distance so it was a really hard sprint and then a long rest. I was in a group with a few of my band friends. In the end, we were happy with how we did. Next time is if we do this again, I hope we can run a further distance as I think it would be more beneficial.

Choice Handball

Today, we had choice day and I chose to play handball in the small gym with mostly other band kids. We split into 3 teams and played very often because there wasn't that many of us, so it was a workout. It was mostly organized as a group and we were really good with making decisions together and overall, it was a really great gym day. A big shout out to Earl for organizing and getting all the equipment.

Buddies (last Tuesdays post)

Today our class went and saw our little buddies again and it went well.  At the beginning, I talked to my buddy about how much chocolate he ate over the break, and the said "100 million pieces" and started laughing, but later he told me that it was actually 20 pieces. We talked about healthy eating and he said his stomach hurt a little after eating a lot of candy, so I told him that eating a lot of sugar (aka candy) is bad for you, and having a little candy is okay, but we should try to eat healthier foods. He also said he went skateboarding on the weekend and had fun.

We were mostly focussing on underhand throwing and making sure that they step with the opposite foot today. Originally, my buddy was stepping forward with the same foot on the side he was throwing with, but I went step by step through with him about stepping with the opposite foot and after a little practice, he understood!! During the golf game, we was throwing correctly which made me happy because it meant I was able to teach him, and he listened and understood.

THE ULTIMATE DRAGON TRAILS BATTLE

Day 1 Band vs. Day 2 Band
The Ultimate Match

Even though we competed before, the Wildcats and the BBW's needed to combine to win this battle. We couldn't come up with a name for our team and then we realized why... we weren't a team. We were a Squad.

The game was mostly equal the whole way through and the Squad shined on the offense, but the struggle was real in the defence. We had difficulty coming up with plays and tactics, and of course, this is what the whole game came down to.....

It was the last play and all the other team had to do was score and we'd end in a tie, but that wasn't good enough for the Squad, we wanted Victory. We set up our defensive play and just as they were about to score, the Squad's defence came alive and stopped the play. We were victorious.

(just so you guys know this isn't actually legit... I was attempting to be funny, but we all know that's never going to happen lol)

SHS Dance Week

This past week was dance week. I'm not a very good dancer, but I always end up having fun anyways. Our band class did Jazz on Monday and Bhangra on Wednesday and we dominated on both days, in skills and sportsmanship. It is neat to learn different types if dances and I like the competitions at the end of the block because there's a good atmosphere and its fun to cheer others on. For Bhangra, Mr. Williams and Neuf both slayed in the teacher battle :) All the Sullivan students who taught us were really talented and did a great job teaching, so thank you to all of them. Overall, dance week is just a cool time and the energy is great!!!

Blog Posts...

So my blog hasn't been letting me upload my posts, so here's all the ones that were saved in my drafts...

CHARIOT GAME

So today, we played a super cool game in the kabadi field on the lower field. We had to get into teams of 5, so I was in a team with Earl, Miguel, Jessica, and Chris. We all had to hold onto a hoop and "protect" the pinnies that the driver had. We got took a lot of pinnies from the other teams and Jessica got a sweet bruise on her cheek (lol). Despite all the ripped pants and shorts, grass stained shirts, and bruises, it was still an awesome gym block and I hope we play the game again.

CHOICE FITNESS

Today, we did something different and had a choice fitness day, which I liked because there was something for everyone. A group of us band kids decided to do Zumba and it was.... interesting. At first, it wasn't difficult and went kind of slow, but by the end I was really tired. We had a lot of fun, even though it was really hard to follow along to the steps sometimes. If we were to have this option again, I don't think I would choose it because I probably would have gotten more out of pyramids, but I'm glad that I tried something new today.

MEMORY GAME

Today, we played one of John's games and it was really interesting because nobody had ever played it before. I really liked it because it combined teamwork, fitness, and the most important thing... FUN! We were split up into teams and were given a colour. When we were going for a lap around the school, John and Neuf hid our colour pinnies underneath yoga mats and once we got back, we had to find them. Sound easy... right?? Nope. We each had to take turns and do an exercise before we could lift up the mat, plus remember which ones we had already checked. I'm going to be honest... our team didn't do very well at the beginning, but got a little better towards the end. But even though we didn't do the best, we still had a good time and got a good workout, so it turned out okay.

WILDCATS!!!!!

For gym today, we played this REALLY FUN game called dragon tails... which is like flag football. We were split up into teams according to our birth months and we named our team... THE WILDCATS. It was super fun and our team really got into the game, and in the end, the Wildcats won (yay). What I think I liked most about this game was the sportsmanship and spirit that came along with it. We cheered a lot and had loads of fun. I really hope we play this game again and I think it would be cool if we did Day 1 Band vs. Day 2 Band or something like that.

WHAT TEAM? .....WILDACTS!

GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME!!!

BUDDIES!!

Today, our class went to an elementary school and met our buddies for the again. The other times we went, Alexis and I were partners because her buddy wasn't here, but this time I was on my own, so it was a little different.. We talked with them a little at the beginning about what they did during spring break and my buddy said that he had fun and played lots of soccer and basketball. The  focus of todays class was jumping and squatting. My buddy and I participated in the activities, but he said his leg was really hurting, so we sat on the side of the gym and cheered on the other students and gave them high fives. Overall, from the part of gym class that he did participate in, he understood the different types of jumps, but I had to remind him to stop running and do a proper squat.

My buddy is very energetic and being around him really reminded me of my experiences in elementary school. It also opened my eyes to how hard it must be for a teacher to teach thirty kids... I could barely handle one!!! I am very thankful that I have this opportunity to be a big buddy for an elementary school student because it gives me the chance to help give him a better elementary school experience. I remember when I was in elementary school, my older buddies didn't put much effort into trying to get to know me and be my friend, and that's something I wish I could've had. I'm happy that we get to continue seeing our buddies for the rest of the year and I cant wait until next time :)

Speedball

On Thursday during gym class, our class played speed ball on the upper field. Even though it was really fun, it was also tiring because there was so much running. I scored a lot and our team won both times. I can't wait to get to play again because is is definitely one of my favourite gym activities.

Buddies :)

On Tuesday, Feb.17, our gym class went to an Elementary school to do our buddy program. It was really fun and exciting for me to meet my buddy and get to talk with him. I learnt that his favourite sport is soccer and he plays on a team with orange and white jerseys. He told me his favourite superhero is Batman because he is the 'Swaggest' and that his favourite character is Phineas from Phineas and Ferb. He talked about his favourite class being gym and told me he has two younger sisters and two younger brothers. I am excited to see him again on this coming Tuesday and can't wait to play more games and have fun :)

Active Learning- Reflection

So far this year, I have shown I am prepared for class by bringing my gym strip. I have shown I am willing to participate by always having a positive attitude and I am constantly excited to try new things. I am always willing to help set up, take down, and organize activities our class does on choice days, such as volleyball and dodge ball. Since I am in grade 10 and the majority of the block is younger than me, I always ask if they need help with blogs or if they need clarification on activities and fitness exercises. Unlike previous years, I enjoy fitness days (even though it is hard and tiring) because now have a better understanding of my body. I know and can recognize the difference between when I just want to give up, and when I have pushed myself to the very limit and cannot go any further because I am completely exhausted. Overall, I always try my best in class and am always willing to help others when they need it.

I contribute to the overall success of the class because I always come to class with a positive attitude.  I am hard working and constantly encourage my classmates to participate and try their best.  I interact well with the other students in the class. I help out when my peers ask me to. I set up, take down, and organize activities on choice days. As I said before, since I'm part of the older group of students now, I make sure I'm always being a good role model, no matter what the activity is.

Example:

Fitness days aren't as challenging for me as they were last year and the year before for multiple reasons. What I mean by this is that I personally believe I'm in the best physical condition of my life right now because of the amount of field hockey and Tae Kwon Do I do. I also go running on a regular basis to keep my fitness level to the max. On fitness days, I always try my best and put 110% into whatever fitness we are doing, so it is still challenging, but in different ways than it used to be. Right now, I'm at a 9.1 for my beep test score and my goal is to achieve a score of 9.5 or higher by the end of the year, which I believe I will be able to reach. On fitness days, I always motivate my peers to do their best and put in their full effort.

Example:

To me, leadership means to be a good role model and a helpful peer in the class.  People who encourage and motivate you to do better are leaders. Leaders help organize activities for the class and make sure they run smoothly and all the rules are followed. In our class, I believe there are a lot of role models who help and motivate their peers to try their best and participate. Everyone is really supportive and always cheering each other on. I believe the grade 10's are putting in a good effort to help the grade 9's out with many things, such as gym blogs and always motivating them to do their best.

I update my PE blog on a regular basis and write about my active living, inside school and outside of school. I write about choice activities, fitness days, field hockey, tae kwon do, and fun activities I do with my family and friends. I also help the grade 9's in our class with their blogs.

Example:

Overall, I believe that I deserve the work habit "G" and a 95% (A) for my efforts so far in this year :)
