BCCH Child Run 2015

Instead of running the Child Run by myself and going for my time, I ran the 5 km with my brother, since it was his first time running it. His goal was 42 minutes, but he ended up getting 33min 53sec!!! I was super proud of him and it was really fun running with him.

For 14 years, my family has participated and raised money for BC Children's Hospital with our team "Jeevan's Journey" because it is our way of giving back for all they've done for my little sister. This year, we raised $10 000 and overall (in 14 years) we have raised $145 000 for the hospital. It is an event we look forward to every year and it has become a family tradition. Next year, since it is our 15th anniversary, we want to make a huge team and raise more money than we ever have before, so let me know if you're interested :)

Buddy Visit

Toady we went to visit our little buddies again. We had just finished our band concert so it was really confusing and disorganized, but most of us managed to make it there on time. Today, we played a modified game of baseball (using a tennis racquet and tennis ball) to work on their catching and throwing. For the last couple of visits, we worked in these two things individually, but now it was time to put it into a game for them to play, so they could apply their skills and learning. My buddy and I partnered up with Pallvi and her buddy. We followed the rules of the game that Neuf told us and our buddies had a really fun time. We cheered them on and encouraged them to remember what they had learnt before. After class, Pallvi and I reflected on the visit and agreed that we were a positive part of our buddies' gym class today and helped them learn and improve their skills while having good sportsmanship. Next time we go, it will be the last time we see our buddies and I'm excited to see them again!

Parent Project Mid-Term (Guest Blogger- My Dad)

DIGITAL PORTFOLIO:

Have you read your son/daughters blog? Was there anything that surprised you or stood out immediately?

Yes... I was impressed with the level of detail she provides...I notice she enjoys sayings..

What was your favourite part about reading his/her reflections?

It provides me a better insight into her thinking and approach to fitness in general and her gym class.

What did you learn about your son/daughter that you didn't know before reading the blog?

The different types of activities she does and the number of pictures she takes, I know she enjoys taking pictures.

What part of your child's growth/personality has been reaffirmed for you?

Her commitment to her fitness and the work ethic and level of detail she provides.

What is missing in the blog that you think s/he should include for the teacher or peers?

I noticed she did not discuss her Team BC field hockey endeavours.

If you were evaluating him/her on his/her blogging efforts, what would you say? What would you give him/her out of 25? How did you come up with that number?

23/25. I based the number on her level of detail, her commitment to fitness, the overall look of the blog, the pictures to support her activities, her motivational saying. overall it is very complete and thorough.

HEALTHY LIVING:

What do you notice about your child's health choices outside of school?

She makes good choices regarding her health outside of school.

What activity and or diet choices does s/he make on their own?

She generally makes good food choices. She is drinking more water, eating more yogurt, granola and trying to eat other healthy snacks.

What exercise/eating choices are encouraged buy the family/household?

We encourage healthy eating and being active as a way of life. She has a good breakfast, snacks throughout the day, plenty of water, and a good supper. She generally stays away from unhealthy choices.

Did you see any evidence of this in his/her blog?

Yes, she posted a photo of her breakfast.

What is missing that should be included?

Some more detail regarding her food choices to provide you with a more complete picture, or she could take more photos.

What improvements do you think your child could/should make to further his/her understanding and participation in his/her own health?

She is working on being a member of Team BC field hockey. She does her stretching and strength exercises, but needs to be more consistent with them. She also could so some more running. she understands the level of competition and what she needs to do in order to succeed. however, balancing school, homework, activities and sports can be challenging at times.

What things can you as parent do to push this learning/practice?

We support her as much as possible, encourage her to take ownership, drive her to the gym and practices. we provide feedback to her and try to make sure she understands what it takes to succeed.

If you were to evaluate your son/daughter on their progress towards personal healthy life choices what would you say? What mark would you give them out of 25 for his/her efforts and demonstration of those efforts in the blog? How did you come up with that number?

22/25. She is very active, makes good health choices. her blog is quite detailed and she has put a lot of thought and effort into it. she wants to succeed and continues to work towards it.

Circuit Fitness

Today, since it was pretty good weather outside, the whole block did the Fitness Circuit on the upper field. I was in a group with Bo, Yulia, Shiho, Gaby, Nicole, Pallvi, Cece, and Nathan. We had really high energy and actually had a fun time while doing a good job of exercising at the same time. We made it fun for ourselves by doing everything as a team and encouraging each other A LOT. We sang and danced a lot too (lol???)

Also, too bad Neuf wasn't there, we missed you...

Volunteering

On Sunday, May 10, I volunteered at the Special Olympics 30th Annual Mother's Day Walkathon with Pallvi and Gagan. I am a rhythmic gymnastics coach in the SOBC program as my sister is an athlete and its a great way for me to give back. We did glitter tattoos for the people who wanted and it was really fun to put a smile on people's faces :)

BOOT CAMP FITNESS

Today, since both band classes were together, there wasn't enough room in the gym for all the classes so we went outside to the back parking lot and did a boot camp that consisted of various exercises. I partnered up with Sarah for the challenge thing at it was really hard because we were competing to win. In the end I won, but that's not what is important because we both had a really good workout and pushed to our maxes. I was sweating a lot at the end and my face was flushed. One thing I regret was choosing to run for the first drill because it would've been more beneficial to do in the middle, but now I know for next time. Today, I give myself a 4.5/5 overall because I was exhausted at the end and I encouraged my peers to keep going when we were tired. Mine and Sarah's scores are posted below:

Speedball- Monday, May 4

Today both band classes played speedball, which is one of my favourite games to play because it is really fun and a good workout at the same time. I find that I run a lot in this game because I like to participate. Overall I would rate my effort as a 4/5 today because I was sweating and breathing heavy at the end, but there was some points where I think that I could have tried a little harder to run to the ball and get there first. Two things I did today to make the class better for my peers were (and I know that they're obvious) passing the ball to others and cheering on and encouraging everyone when they have the ball or are fighting to get it. Next time, I will probably volunteer to be the goalie for part of the time so everyone gets a chance to run and score. Overall, the participation was awesome and I love having combined gym class with the other band because we can do so many bigger games.

Tuesday, April 28- Fitness Day

We did the fitness in which one person does the exercises in the gym while the other person runs the lap and then we switch. I was partners with Alexis, but did the exercises with Boyana since we were running and doing the exercises at the same time. I think we really motivated each other and worked hard for the whole block. We made sure we were doing the exercises correctly and fully. The reason I tried really hard was because I want to stay in shape for my own health and field hockey Spring League and provincials just started up.
